Celebrating Blessed Mary MacKillop's Feast Day on August 8

Mary MacKillop was a tenacious woman who let nothing stand in the way of her care for the underprivileged. As a young woman in the 1860s, guided by the charming yet eccentric priest, Julian Tenison Woods, Mary established a unique form of Australian religious life dedicated to the service of the poor, especially through the education of their children

Mary's singular vision and determination led her into conflict with the leading churchmen of her day. As bishops and priests - including those who had once been her closest allies - attempted to wrestle control of the Sisters of St Joseph from her, Mary stood steadfast in her convictions, even when excommunicated from her beloved Catholic Church and accused of alcoholism. It was a battle she was prepared to take all the way to the Vatican itself.

With the official recognition of Mary as Australia’s first saint, attention turns to the question: 'Who is this woman?' If Australians are to have a saint, they want one of flesh-and-blood, one truly their own. Mary MacKillop, a woman of strength, humour and compassion, does not disappoint.

So You're Working for the Catholic Church
So You're Seeking to Renew Your Faith

When I finished reading Monsignor Tony Doherty's So You're Working for the Catholic Church I felt more than ever glad, proud and thankful that I am a Catholic. It boosted my faith and recharged my batteries. It's the best apologia (without being apologetic) I've ever read.
Richard Hughes, Fairfax Journalist

I have no hesitation in recommending this 'friendly and gentle introduction' as one of the best resources available to Australians today. The tone is personal and invitatory. The telling of the Catholic Church story through simple illustrations of the profound mysteries that are its foundation has a basic unity that links each of its twelve chapters. Brother Gerard Rummery

Opinion - All one in the eyes of God

We are all made in the image and likeness of God, and in the heart of God there is a unity that deepens and goes beyond how we have divided ourselves. It doesn’t matter whether we are black or white or brown or olive. It doesn’t matter if we are powerbrokers, it doesn’t matter what money we have, it doesn’t matter what authority we have. - Bishop Greg O'Kelly, The Southern Cross
