Event: New Evangelisation in Context: Major Conference in Sydney!
Hear what attendees had to say about the Melbourne event!
Pope Benedict has launched a new department to promote the idea of a new evangelisation. If his wish is to be fulfilled, there is a need to understand the context for this work.
Many of us recognise that there are issues in the Catholic church today. We are looking for a way forward and a sense of hope. Ongoing issues such as the mishandling of the sex abuse and financial scandals, poor public relations and controversial Vatican appointments have left many wondering how to make Jesus the focus of the church again.
Garratt Publishing is hosting a conference with three dynamic speakers who bring to life a message of hope and renewal.
Br Louis DeThomasis FSC, author of Flying in the Face of Tradition, is a senior De La Sallian brother who is highly critical of the institutional church and a vocal advocate for the greater role of women in the church. As a senior De La Sallian brother he feels that he is being called to speak out about issues that are important to him and to many of us.
Dr Phyllis Zagano is an expert on the role of women in ministry and believes that women can play a greater role on the altar. Her book Women Deacons takes a close look at the role women have played in the diaconate over the years and why today, more than ever, that role needs to be reinstated.
They will be joined by Rev Frank O'Loughlin, author of This Time of the Church, who will talk about the rise of pluralism and its effect on Catholics everywhere.
Louis DeThomasis FSC is a brother of the De La Salle community of brothers. He was president and professor of interdisciplinary studies at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota from 1984 to 2005, and is co-founder and former president of the Christian Brothers Investment Services, Inc. He is currently president of CBIS-GLOBAL Europe based in Rome where he now resides. He is the author of books and articles on Christian education and has received much recognition for his lifetime of service to the church.
Dr Phyllis Zagano is an internationally acclaimed Catholic scholar who has lectured throughout the world. A graduate of Marymount College in New York, she holds the Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and three master's degrees: in communications, literature and theology. She is the author of fifteen books in religious studies, including Women Deacons with Gary Macy and William T Ditewig, and Women in Ministry.
Rev Frank O'Loughlin has been a prominent priest in the Archdiocese of Melbourne for many years. Ordained in 1969, he completed his doctorate in Rome in 1972 and continued liturgical studies in Ireland before taking up teaching positions at Corpus Christi Seminary and at Catholic Theological College from 1977 to 1996. Fr O'Loughlin continues to lecture in parishes and to various other groups and his new book This Time of the Church looks at the theological purpose of the Church.
Confirmed! Dr Veronica Lawson rsm a former congregation leader of the Ballarat East Mercies, is now able to attend the Sydney Conference. She will talk on rediscovering Jesus in the Gospel of Mark and the call of women to ministry.
